Citizenship and Naturalization For Green Card HoldersForeign nationals who meet certain requirements are eligible to apply for naturalization to become citizens of the United States. Some of the general requirements for naturalization include: Lawful Permanent Resident status (green card holder) for at least five years Continuous residence during the five years after acquiring permanent residence and prior to applying for naturalization No single absence from the United States in excess of one year (absolute) or in excess of six months (may be waived in certain circumstances) Actual physical presence within the United States for at least half of the five years preceding application for naturalization Person of good moral character during the entire five year period preceding application Basic knowledge of U.S. history and government Basic ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language
